Case Study
Office of the U.S. Air Force Surgeon General
Directorate of Modernization (HQ USAF/SGR)
Congressionally-funded R&D Project
Contract #FA7014-07-C-0005

Recently completed a one year, 2 million dollar contract to perform server consolidation via virtualization, our engineering team has built a new server consolidation platform that will be deployed to numberous USAF hospital datacenters to effectively streamline (and in many cases eliminate) legacy server infrastructure. Using the BRES CX3-40, the USAF will use Egenera's Vblade technology to virtualize system candidates for hosting on the new blade server system.

The I/O virtualization components introduced with Egenera's PAN manager coupled with the "bare metal partitioning" of blade processing resources with their fully integrated hypervisor represent the best in class consolidation platform, offering several layers of virtual componentry that would otherwise need to be powered, cooled or "refreshed" on a recurring basis. With this careful blend of technology, we are now able to host up 100's of virtual servers in a 42U cabinet on a single floor tile with as little as six of Egenera's innovative and green-friendly blades. Additionally, we have evaluated with great success various implementations of a virtual tape library solution to provide high performance disk-based backups. Remote replication betweeen these devices will enable us to implement a low-cost off-site storage capability that in many cases will be completely tape-free.

This unprecedented level of vertical versus horizontal scale with consolidation via virtualization allows datacenter managers to achieve far greater return on their investments, significantly reducing the all too often necessity of physically expanding their space to accomodate growth.
